Green Week Update – 18 January 2020
The number of the day
50,000 trees
have been planted in Berlin and Brandenburg since 2012 as a result of the Green Week. Half of these trees were donated following a campaign by the forestry industry association Deutscher Forstwirtschaftsrat e.V. aimed at visitors to the fair. Once again this year visitors in Hall 27 can board a rowing machine and through their efforts add more trees to the Green Week woodland
Topics of the day at the Green Week
Families Minister Giffey loves the Floral Hall
“The Floral Hall is and will always be the highlight for me”, admitted Families Minister Franziska Giffey during her tour of the Green Week on Friday afternoon. The starting point was the Farm Experience, where participants in a course for farm managers expressed their concerns about their future career prospects in view of the increase in legal restrictions. Together with another member of the cabinet, Svenja Schulze, she visited the Rural Youth display, where she helped to decorate a wall and competed successfully at hammering in nails. Incidentally, the minister’s love of the Green Week goes back a long way: “When I was mayor of Neukölln I always attended and visited the allotment gardeners here. Berlin is an important place for allotments in Germany.” Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, contact: Ulla Fiebig, telephone: +49 30 20655 -1061 , email: presse@bmfsfj.bund.de
Environment Minister Schulze plants a tree at the Green Week
During her tour of the Green Week the Environment Minister Svenja Schulze spoke with representatives of animal and livestock associations, organic cultivation and forestry. She was accompanied by the Project Manager for the IGW, Lars Jaeger. Minister Schulze planted a common beech tree on the forestry industry’s area. Along with other trees it is intended to form part of the Green Week’s reforesting project on the site of the former tyre factory in Schmöckwitz. The minister is particularly impressed by the international dimension of the Green Week, because, as Schulze herself said, the protection of insects and the environment are an important topic not just in Germany but in other countries too. Christian Lindner opens the open-view bakery
As the current “bread ambassador” the chairman of the FDP political party Christian Lindner tried his hand at baking pretzels on Friday at the Green Week, and in so doing he opened the open-view bakery in Hall 3.2. His love of bread comes from his family background: as a child Christian Lindner spent much of his time in his grandparent’s bakery in Wuppertal. As a way of illustrating the difficulties faced by bakers as a result of the new obligation for bakeries to provide a till receipt, Karl-Dietmar Plentz, a baker from Brandenburg, handed him a glass jar full of receipts. The FDP intends to campaign for the abolition of the compulsory requirement to issue till receipts. Awards ceremony: Farmers for protecting insects
Wild flower strips, bare fallow areas, ponds and dead wood offer protection and an important habitat for insects. Germany’s environment minister Svenja Schulz presented awards at the Green Week to farmers and agricultural cooperatives whose efforts in this field have helped to protect insects. The judges for this competition, comprising scientists, beekeepers, conservationists and farmers, presented cash prizes totalling 26,550 euros to eight so-called beacon projects. The competition was organised by a foundation, Stiftung LV Münster, the seed and plant protection company Syngenta, and the magazine top agrar and attracted entries from 130 initiatives and farming businesses. FIZ: Fish is becoming increasingly popular with German consumers
There is encouraging news from the Fish Information Centre (FIZ) at the Green Week: Due to a substantial increase in stocks the fishing quotas in European waters have been increased by 40 per cent for mackerel, and by 23 per cent for haddock, according to the general manager of the FIZ, Dr. Matthias Keller. Fish and other seafood are becoming increasingly popular among German consumers: compared with 2018 sales last year rose by almost six per cent. Visitors to the FIZ stand can compare many of the different types of fish on display on a ten square metre bed of ice, and can also enjoy freshly prepared specialities at the herring counter. Finland records export increase since its partnership with the Green Week
In 2019 Finland was the partner country of the Green Week. According to provisional figures, food exports have risen this year by 34 per cent, said Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä. “Finland’s participation last year in the Green Week produced outstanding results, in terms of boosting trade and the country’s image“, he said. He intended to visit the Green Week again this year. After Estonia and Sweden, Germany was the third most important trading partner of Finnish food producers. “A little bit of Liechtenstein“ at the Green Week

Along this path refreshments are available in the form of Alpine cheese on pear bread, smoked country hams, chocolates, fruit liqueurs and beer. Vitamins from Lithuania
Sweet and fruity aptly describes the honey-based products from the Lithuanian company Medaus Magija. Domestically produced honey is mixed with freeze-dried berries, ginger or peppermint to create a real vitamin bomb. The freeze-drying process means that the ingredients retain 99 per cent of their vitamins. It can be used to make a tasty spread or as a beverage: Just dissolve a spoonful of fruit honey in water heated to up to 40 degrees to make a healthy drink. Chocolate from the Silk Road
For anyone who wants to get away from well-worn Central European routes in their search for a very special chocolate will find what they are looking for on the Silk Road. In its display at the Green Week, Uzbekistan is presenting for first products from its ultra-modern chocolate factory, and the flavours are every bit as good as those from traditional western producers. Established in 2017, the Crafers company has production plants covering 20 hectares, with an annual capacity of 46,000 tonnes and capable of producing more than 256 different types of confectionary even in this initial stage of its development. All the relevant international certification has been complied with. Hall 2.2, Stand 100, contact: Abdullaev Abdumalik Abdukadirovich, telephone: +998 97,414 0786, email: info@crafers.uzi
