Shortly after the opening of the ICC Berlin, as a teenager, I experienced “Maurice Béjart and his Ballet du XXe Siècle” in Hall 1 in 1979. Though having arrived at the entrance very much in time, I was not seated until just before the curtain rose. Attempting to reach the balcony by using only the staircases, I kept getting stuck in dead-ends and seating niches. The only way up was via the escalator! That's when I knew: this was where I wanted to work.

In 1986, my adventure began “in front of the curtain”, in the protocol department of what was then called AMK Berlin. Then 24 years later, I moved to the Messe Berlin Guest Events team and to my workplace at the ICC Berlin, with many glimpses behind the curtain. My desk is no longer at the ICC Berlin, but still with the Guest Events team, and the seriousness of our work “in front of the curtain” is often exchanged for some fun and lightheartedness behind the curtain!
