From the Foundation to the Top: The Radio Tower at a Glance

The Berlin Radio Tower is an architectural landmark, a technical masterpiece, and a popular excursion destination. It has an eventful history with many fascinating details.

Impressive figures

The tower is 147 meters tall and weighs around 600 tons, 400 tons of which is pure steel. Despite its impressive height, the Radio Tower takes up surprisingly little space with a footprint of just 20 x 20 meters. The viewing platform is 126 meters high and the restaurant is 55 meters high. To reach the platform, take the glass elevator, which travels at 4 m/s and brings visitors up in just 33 seconds. There is also an outdoor staircase with 610 steps leading to the top.

A true classic

Opened on September 3, 1926, the "Lange Lulatsch" was initially a transmission mast and soon became a symbol. As early as 1929, the first television picture in Germany was broadcast from here, followed by the world's first regular television program in 1935. During the Cold War, the tower became a visible symbol of freedom.

Architecture modeled on Paris

The Radio Tower was designed by Professor Heinrich Straumer. Its construction is reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower, which served as inspiration for the Berlin Radio Tower. As in Paris, the elevator is also radio-controlled, a technical rarity.

The tower is illuminated with effect

Since 2011, the tower has been illuminated by a modern LED system. With 68 lights, 9.5 kW of power, and a service life of around 50,000 hours, the system creates an impressive play of light, ranging from a rainbow effect to flaming trade fair illumination. Each leading trade fair in Berlin has its own color: Green Week is green, ITB is orange, and InnoTrans is blue.

A visitor magnet for almost 100 years

Since it opened, more than 17 million people have visited the Funkturm, with around 60,000 visiting each year most recently. Whether it's the view, the history, or the atmosphere, the Funkturm has fascinated generations for nearly a century.
